Headrest Monitors Readymade
Obviosly, how this is done will depend on what monitors you have bought and which headrests you have to start with.
I bought Xtrons HD705 units
Preparing the headrests
unless you have a black interior your new headrest probably wont be exactly the same colour as your car interior, mine being platinum grey didnt fit at all.
On these particular ones the leatherette cover comes off and can be sprayed with leather spray dye, so they can be matched perfectly
Simply remove the headrest cover and hang up on the washing line, then spray evenly from about 6 inches away
Leave to dry overnight
and respray a second coat the next day
leave to dry again, until it no longer feels tacky and you shold have a colour matched headrest cover.
Removing the original headrests
First remove the seat backs top and bottom, these are held on by some clips, See the how to here
Near the end of the headrests bars you will see that it is held on with a spring clip, remove the clip carefully with a screwdriver or pair of pliers
The headrest is now loose, Move the seat as far forward as it will go, and recline the seat back quite a way, the headrest will only have room to come out at an angle.
feed these bars and the wiring in to the seat, dont forget to put the plastic size changers that come with these units on to the bars first.
to ensure that the headrests stay firmly in, you can use a small section of piping cut to the same lenght as your original headrests.
feed the wires around carefully, you can use loose cable ties to keep the cables roughly in place. bring them down to the bottom of the seat
if your units are to be standalone then tie wrap the cables at the bottom, inside the seat, bring the power cables down. If not and you want to connect them together (so each can view the others screen) then bring the cables down also
you can now reattach the seat back
If you want to use the provided cigar lighter power cords, you can simply put it in and test. and end here.
make a hole for the power cables to go through under the seat remember to leave a small loop for movement of the seat
pull the cables through to the rear seat
Now decide where you will get the power from. you have a choice of Rear Cigar lighter (ie take the power cables behind the socket.) or the rear fuse carrier
Rear Cigar Lighter - it is easy to get to, but unless you have the child lock functionality on your drivers window buttons, which will cut off power to the rear lighter, the 12v supply is constant, 2 headrest wired up to this socket without a switch in line will drain more than the reccomended amperage drain while the units are switched off.
to do this click here
Rear Fuse Carrier - Much better choice, this fuse carrier has several spare slots, and is turned of by the MMI, this means that after engine switch of you have circa 5 minutes of power before switch off.
First click here to see the ski hatch removal
Pull your cables through and connect to the rear fuse carrier
Click here for rear fuse carrier in the left luggage compartment near the media rack.
