Special tools required



Spark plug socket 3122 B	Puller for pencil-type ignition coils T40039	Puller for pencil-type ignition coils T10166

WARNING
Position puller -T40039- on thick rib at the top of pencil-type ignition coils -arrow- and then pull ignition coils off spark plugs. Do not apply puller to lower ribs, as these could be damaged.

V8 and V6 petrol engines

Switch off ignition

Cylinder bank (right-side)

Remove air cleaner

Remove both bolts -1-

Push connector -2- towards pencil-type ignition coil, press catch down by hand and pull off connector.

Use puller -T40039- to detach pencil-type ignition coils -3- from spark plugs.

Remove spark plugs using spark plug socket -3122B-

Install new spark plugs

Tightening torques	Nm
Spark plugs in cylinder head	30

Note : Press pencil-type ignition coils into the openings provided on the cylinder head cover by hand.

Cylinder bank (left-side

Remove both bolts -1-

Push connector -2- towards pencil-type ignition coil, press catch down by hand and pull off connector.

Use puller -T40039- to detach pencil-type ignition coils -3- from spark plugs.

Remove spark plugs using spark plug socket -3122B-

Install new spark plugs

Tightening torques	Nm
Spark plugs in cylinder head	30

–	Push connector -2- towards pencil-type ignition coil, press catch down by hand and pull off connector.

–	Use puller -T40039- to detach pencil-type ignition coils -3- from spark plugs.

–	Remove spark plugs using spark plug socket -3122B-.

–	Install new spark plugs.

Note

Press pencil-type ignition coils into the openings provided on the cylinder head cover by hand.

Cylinder bank (left-side)

–	Remove both bolts -1-.

–	Push connector -2- towards pencil-type ignition coil, press catch down by hand and pull off connector.

–	Use puller -T40039- to detach pencil-type ignition coils -3- from spark plugs.

–	Remove spark plugs using spark plug socket -3122B-.

–	Install new spark plugs.

Note

Press pencil-type ignition coils into the openings provided on the cylinder head cover by hand.

V10 petrol engines

–	Pull off rear engine cover panel -2-.

Removing, cylinder bank 1 (right-side):

–	Loosen hose clips -arrows- and remove air hose between air mass meter -G70- and throttle valve module -J338-.

–	Move air hose with vacuum hoses -1 and 2- connected to one side.

–	Detach electrical connector from air mass meter -G70-.

–	Unscrew bolts -arrows-.

–	Take out top section of air cleaner housing.

–	Remove bolts -1- and -2-.

–	Use puller -T40039- to pull ignition coils approx. 30 mm out of spark plug apertures.

–	Release electrical connectors and at the same time pull connectors evenly off ignition coils.

–	Remove spark plugs using spark plug socket -3122B-.

–	Install new spark plugs.

Removing, cylinder bank 2 (left side):

–	Loosen hose clips -arrows- and remove air hose between air mass meter 2 -G246- and throttle valve module 2 -J544-.

–	Detach electrical connector from air mass meter 2 -G246-.

–	Unscrew bolts -arrows-.

–	Take out top section of air cleaner housing.

–	Remove bolts -1- and -3-.

–	Use puller -T40039- to pull ignition coils approx. 30 mm out of spark plug apertures.

–	Release electrical connectors and at the same time pull connectors evenly off ignition coils.

–	Remove spark plugs using spark plug socket -3122B-.

–	Install new spark plugs.

Installing ignition coils.

–	Fit all ignition coils loosely into spark plug apertures.

–	Align ignition coils with electrical connectors and plug all connectors simultaneously onto coils.

–	Push ignition coils evenly onto spark plugs by hand (do NOT attempt to knock in coils with any kind of tool).

12-cyl. petrol engine

Cylinder bank (left-side)

–	Remove cover from behind intake manifold -arrows-.

–	Remove cover on left side of engine compartment -arrows-.

–	Remove air hose (left-side) -arrows-.

–	Remove vacuum hose -arrow- leading to brake servo at left section of intake manifold.

–	Unplug electrical connector -4-.

Note

When loosening bolt -1- secure square nut, so that it does not fall out.

–	Unscrew bolts -1 ... 3- and remove left side of intake manifold.

Right side

–	Remove cover on right side of engine compartment -arrows-.

–	Remove air hose (right-side) -arrows-.

–	Unscrew filler cap for oil filler connection.

–	Unplug electrical connector -1-.

Note

When loosening bolt -4- secure square nut, so that it does not fall out.

–	Remove bolts -2 ... 4- and detach right side of intake manifold.

–	Unplug electrical connectors -1- at ignition coils -2-.

–	Use puller -T10166- to detach ignition coils from spark plugs.

–	Remove spark plugs using spark plug socket -3122 B-.

Installation

Installation is performed in reverse sequence; note the following:

Renew seals.

Press pencil-type ignition coils into the openings provided on the cylinder head cover by hand.

Tightening torques:

1)	No tolerance; adhere to specified tightening torque.
